Native Plants on the Sanford Riverwalk

Adam Behring at a native plant yard tour

This summer, Miami University student Adam Behring joined Cuplet Fern to explore native plants on Sanford’s RiverWalk. He shares his experience and the guide he created here:

I am a graduate student pursuing a Biology degree at Miami University. My academic focus revolves around the idea of helping members of my community notice and appreciate the plants around them. This idea will shape the overarching theme for my class projects throughout the program.

The RiverWalk habitat

Over the summer semester I engaged with Cuplet Fern on one of these projects as an internship. My idea involved the creation of a field guide for Sanford’s RiverWalk—a 4.5-mile paved trail in historic downtown Sanford. Like many others, I’ll take a trip to the RiverWalk for a bike ride, or to walk my dogs. Unlike other patrons though, I’ll often pause to observe the plants along the way.

On the RiverWalk

My goal with this guide is to give readers information about the more prominent plant species found along the trail's landscape. I want it to serve as a way to introduce people to the plants they encounter every time they are on the RiverWalk and inspire them to learn more about the other plants they see there. And in doing so, to raise awareness and recognition of the botanical world around them.

Cuplet Fern thanks Adam for his independent study project and making it an effortless experience. We're elated to see a local resident take interest in a popular outdoor recreational area, and spotlight native plants and native plant communities found there. Adam's brochure will be featured on our website and printed in limited quantities as a free resource. We also extend our appreciation to Miami University for their support of this project.
